Congress Concert: Santa María del Mar

The first reference to the Santa Maria del Mar Catedral is from a text of the year 998. This basilica is the work of the architect Berenguer de Montagut and the first stone was laid to commemorate the conquest of Sardinia, which completed the Catalan domination of the Mediterranean initiated ten years earlier with the conquest of Mallorca, and which reached its peak with the entry of Sicily and Greece into the domains of the House of Barcelona.

Externally, it is the only perfectly-finished Gothic church in Catalonia. Its outer walls display the features which differentiate Catalan from European Gothic. True to the Catalan style, there is a predominance of horizontal lines, of solid panels over empty spaces, of flat terraces without roofs, and a preference for large bare surfaces. There are no flying buttresses as in the European Gothic cathedrals, and the towers are octagonal and flat-topped.

The interior of the church is of extraordinary beauty and its exceptional acoustic conditions make it the ideal venue for this concert.

Coral Sant Jordi

The Coral Sant Jordi was formed in 1947 by a group of friends who sing together, conducted by Oriol Martorell who led a social vision of their repertoire associated and compromised with the historical moment of Catalonia.

With an eclectic spirit, combined with a special interest in Catalan music, the Coral Sant Jordi has a long development with more than 1.400 concerts in Spain and other European countries.

The technical and performing requirements that defined the Coral Sant Jordi led them to colaborate with prestigious conductors and composers. Moreover the Barcelona city council and the Autonomous Government of Catalonia have acknowledged the their development publicly with the City of Barcelona Prize and the Saint George Cross award respectively.

At present the Coral Sant Jordi 's choirmaster is Lluís Vila i Casañas.
